CECIL, GA (WALB) – A racing event at South Georgia Motorsports Park in Cecil turned tragic on Saturday.

Mike Walker, co-owner of Blake Housley's Pro Nitrous team, was warming up nitrous oxide bottles for the race when one exploded.

According to the Cook County Coroner, the bottle hit him in the chest before continuing several yards into the air.

Paramedics tried to revive Walker but he was dead when he arrived at Memorial Hospital of Adel.

The American Drag Racing League released a statement saying they "are deeply saddened by the accident. Walker was a dedicated father, a passionate competitor, and we're are cooperating fully with local authorities in investigating the incident."

Walker, a native of Missouri, was 55-years-old.
