AMERICUS - Lucy Peek could very well be the happiest -- and luckiest -- Winn-Dixie shopper in Americus. "It's almost unbelievable. It's wonderful," she said while sitting in her shiny silver 2003 Chevy Malibu.
On what was an ordinary shopping trip in March, Peek used her Customer Reward Card for a small discount on her groceries. What she didn't realize was that with every swipe of her card, she was being entered into the grocery chains "Chevy Everyday Giveaway" contest.
Officials notified her by phone of her winning the car. "I thought it was a telemarketer, I really did. I said, 'What did you say?' She then repeated it," Peak said.
Peek said she was excited about winning the car. "It's very wonderful. It's comfortable. And, it's mine," she said. "We'll take the long way around," she told me as we rode around for the first drive.
She said she plans to drive the new car to her grandson's high school graduation in Florida next month. She's still unsure what she will do with her 1998 Buick she drives now. But one thing she says she does know is that she will "most definitely" continue to shop at Winn-Dixie. "And make sure everyone else does, too."
Winn-Dixie and Chevrolet gave away a 2003 Chevy Mailbu every day in March to customers at it's stores in Florida and South Georgia.
