ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Albany firefighters worked to make sure a fire at an empty house didn't spread to homes next door Monday night.

The fire started on the back porch of a house on Cedar Avenue around 6:30 pm..  Firefighters say vagrants who start fires in vacant homes is an ongoing problem. That's likely what happened here. It happened a few years ago at a shed behind the house.

"This is the first fire we've had in this area in a while but with the vacant houses, we've had problems throughout the year with vagrants," said Battalion Chief Keith Ambrose.

The home has been abandoned for a year. The cause is still under investigation.
