ALBANY, GA (WALB) – Community leaders hope reaching out to young people through basketball will help steer them away from crime.

A weekend basketball tournament is part of the Stop the Violence Movement. It kicked off Friday night at Albany State.

More than 40-teams signed up to play.

Organizers say the three day event will help get hundreds of young people off the streets this weekend.

"It's a good thing we can all come together and play without violence, everyone is excited, we've been waiting on this. I'm waiting to get out there now," said Alford Brown, Hoopfest Participant.

Churches, civic organizations, and city and county leaders helped to raise money to ensure teams didn't have to pay for uniforms or entry fees.
