Snick celebrates 50 years

Posted: Updated:

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A civil rights organization has reached a major milestone.

The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, or Snick, is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

The group was formed in 1960 by college student activists, including Albany's own Reverend Charles Sherrod.

They played a vital part in the civil rights movement by conducting lunch counter sit-ins and voter registration drives.

They faced countless acts of violence in their fight for racial equality.

Some veteran members of the SNCC are now serving in Congress, including Georgia U.S. Representative John Lewis.
