Retirement community on the table in Lee County

ALBANY, GA (WALB) – A new senior living rental community could soon be under construction in Lee County.

County commissioners will vote later this month whether to re-zone 14 acres of land along Forrester Parkway from business to residential.

If approved - Peachtree Housing from Atlanta plans to buy the land and build Forrester Senior Village - a 78-unit apartment community for people 55 and older.

"The development budget is expected to be between $5 and 6 million, depending on the final number of units. The larger majority of those construction dollars will be spent in Lee County with local sub-contractors and local suppliers," said Josh Thomason, Peachtree Housing.

Developers expect the monthly rent will be less than $500 dollars for one and two bedroom apartments.

The complex will be within walking distance of the Publix and CVS now under construction.

If the project is approved, construction could begin as early as summer 2011.
