Albany student says her father is inspiration

By Jim Wallace - bio | email

ALBANY, GA (WALB) –An 18-year old Deerfield Windsor senior says her father is her inspiration as she prepares to compete in a statewide speech competition about "America."

Sonam Patel was presented a check by the Southwest Georgia Exchange Club, and will represent the club in the state competition.

The theme is "What America means to me."

Patel said she immediately thought of her father and how he came from India to America at age 17. "It's unbelievable because you hear about all these immigrant stories, and then to think it's so close to you. It's your own father, it really opens your eyes. It really opens eyes," said Patel.

Patel will compete in the Exchange Club speech competition in June at St. Simons Island.

She plans to enter Georgia Tech in the fall and major in mechanical engineering.
