ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  Because of a tight state budget, Darton College President Peter Sireno says the school can't rely solely on state money to carry out its ambitious master plan.

He wants Darton to increase donations from individual supporters and business partners. Plans for growth include adding more allied health programs and classroom space to a campus that's nearly doubled in size since it opened in 1963.

"There's about 250,000 square feet of academic space, a natatorium there's a diving well facility, there's a wrestling pavilion, a track and field venue pavilion so there's several items in the master plan," said Dr. Peter Sireno, Darton College President/CEO.

State leaders have talked about consolidating some colleges to save money. Dr. Sireno said he doesn't expect Darton to consolidate with Albany State University because the two schools missions are different.

He also said the only way Darton could become a four-year school is if community leaders push for that change.
