BERRIEN COUNTY, GA (WALB) –A Berrien County man was shot in his home early Monday during a home invasion.

The victim says he fought off his attackers with a baseball bat.

Two men invaded a home on Hunter Circle in Berrien County around 1:30 Monday morning and fired shots wounding the owner.

Investigators say one of the men is 30-year old Michael Garvitte whose been in and out of jail. Garvitte went through a front window, then to the door to let his accomplice inside.

"He said the Michael Garvitte guy went to the door and let the black guy in and then papa he said he got the baseball bat and started fighting for his life," said Telicia Storey.

Telicia Storey is Lonnie Harnage's granddaughter and neighbor. She awoke to the sounds of gunfire.

"I heard a boom noise and I looked out at the window and I didn't see anything wrong because the lights were out so I just layed back down in the bed and then I heard another boom," said Storey.

"To our knowledge when the other guy opened the door that's when he started firing," said Berrien County Investigator Regina Wilkerson.

Storey says she saw the men leave the scene. She says the two men jumped in Harnage's red Chevy car hitting this dirt pile before driving away.

"They went storming out of the driveway and that's when my papa ran across the road holding his leg saying he's been shot and to call 9-1-1 and an ambulance," said Storey.

"It was a 2006 Chevrolet Aveo with a Georgia tag DV 571G," said Wilkerson.

If you see the vehicle, investigators want you to contact them.

"If anyone approaches this vehicle they need to use extreme caution. They are armed and they are dangerous," said Wilkerson.

Seven hundred dollars was also stolen from the home.

The victim is expected to make a full recovery.
