AAA: Vehicle operation costs rise 4.8%

 News release from AAA

TAMPA, Fla., (April 8, 2010) – The average cost to own and operate a sedan rose 4.8 percent to 56.6 cents per mile, or $8,487 per year, based on 15,000 miles of annual driving, according to AAA's  2010 edition of the annual ‘Your Driving Cost' study released today. The new brochure is attached to this press release.

Increased gasoline prices are the key factor in this year's ‘Your Driving Costs' study that have increased the operational costs of a vehicle. While increased gas prices are a key factor in driving costs, properly maintaining a vehicle can curb the increase.

"The most cost-effective way to keep a car running is to perform regular oil changes that average $100 a year, versus the $4,000 it would cost to replace an engine that has not been cared for properly," said Pete Candela, director, AAA Automotive Repair. "So, preventative maintenance is the best insurance policy you can have to protect your engine."

It's critical motorists perform basic maintenance on their cars in order to keep them running safely and reliably. Key services — like routine oil changes, tire rotations, and replacing the timing belt or maintaining a timing chain — can be a car owner's insurance against unnecessary and/or major car repairs.

AAA's ‘Your Driving Cost' study analyzes the cost to own and operate a vehicle in the U.S. Ownership costs factored into the study include the cost of insurance, license and registration fees, taxes, depreciation and finance charges. Operational costs in the study include fuel, maintenance and tires.

To conduct its study, AAA compiled detailed driving costs for small, medium, and large sedans. Driving costs in each category are based on the average costs for five top-selling models selected by AAA. By size category, they are:

  • Small Sedan – Chevrolet Cobalt, Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Nissan Sentra and Toyota Corolla.
  • Medium Sedan – Chevrolet Impala, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima and Toyota Camry.
  • Large Sedan – Buick Lucerne, Chrysler 300, Ford Taurus, Nissan Maxima and Toyota Avalon.

AAA tows approximately 30 million motorists each year. Therefore, it's critical that a network of trusted, inspected, and approved auto technicians are always ready to assist stranded motorists with reliable service.

AAA's network of 8,300 Approved Auto Repair Facilities in the United States and Canada ensures motorists receive the most reliable service. Although AAA members receive a discounted rate at AAA's Approved Auto Repair Facilities, non-members can benefit as well knowing they will receive service from a trusted facility that has been through a rigorous process to earn the approval.

"If I'm not comfortable having my own family members utilize these facilities, they are not getting AAA to recommend them to our members and the general public," said Candela.

AAA Auto Club South is the third largest affiliate of AAA, with 78 branch offices serving more than 4.1 million members in Florida, Georgia, West and Middle Tennessee, and Puerto Rico. Since its founding in 1938, AAA Auto Club South has worked to protect and advance freedom of mobility and improve travel safety.
