Americus-- The Sumter County Middle School "Odyssey of the Mind" team won first place in the state championship Saturday--but now they have an even bigger obstacle to overcome.

This is the first time a Sumter County team has won the academic contest. Now, they have an invitation to the World Championship--but they have to raise $7,000 dollars to pay for the trip.

Team member Kayla Kirschner says, "I think we can do it because we can work as a team and we can get anything done pretty much."

Team Coach Annette Garriga says, "Everything is possible so we talk about different ideas and what we think we can do. They don't see their is no hope, everything is something they can do or hope to accomplish."

They hope to accomplish their goal with a few fundraisers, including a barbecue April 29th at the Americus Fire Station.

700 teams from across the globe will compete for the world title at the University of Iowa in May.
