News release from Albany State University
Albany - A first-time team entry won the second annual Albany State University Founder's Day Golf Tournament held Saturday, April 3, at Flint River Golf Course.
Henry Everson, Norman Royal, Craig Sanchez and Jerry Gamble made up the team representing the Georgia Power Company that took home $500 in prize money for shooting a 56 on the par 72 course.
"This was the first time our company has sponsored a team," Everson said. "It was a beautiful day. Our team played well, and our players thought it was a fun event."
The team of John Smith, Willie Miles, James "Doc" Holloway and Charlie Lindsey shared $400 in cash for taking second place. The third place team representing South Georgia Brick Company split $300 in winnings. Team members included Doug Adair, Donnie Morrell, Tim Stewart and Danny Gloria.
The tournament, which featured a $1 million shootout (qualifiers for the closest to the pin on the designated par 3 hole) sponsored by John Ross Jewelers, raised money for scholarships. Sam Russell, an ASU alumnus, won the four-man shootout, earning a $100 gift certificate from John Ross Jewelers and a chance to swing for a hole-in-one and the $1 million prize.
Russell's try for the hole-in-one fell short, but most participants emerged as winners, many taking home door prizes that included gift certificates, golf clubs, umbrellas, caps, golf balls, tees and drink coolers.
Coleman Wilson, an ASU alumnus from the class of 1970, believes the golf tournament is a good idea.
"It was great," Wilson said. "Our team only tied for fifth place, but we had a great time. Coach Smith is really doing a good job with this tournament."

Hylick; Albany Convention & Visitors Bureau; Mark's Greenhouses; Albany Lincoln Mercury; Sunbelt/Ford Town of Albany, Inc.; Ruby Tuesday/Red Lobster; South Georgia Brick Co.
