City will pay back HUD money

By David Miller

ALBANY, GA (WALB) – The Albany City Commission voted Tuesday morning to repay the federal government $374,000 from the general fund.

The commission will ask Congressman Sanford Bishop to work with Cutliff Grove to regain its standing with HUD.

Five years ago, Cutliff Grove Baptist Church got Housing and Urban Development money to build affordable housing on Broad Avenue.

The HUD money passed through the city and was then given to Cutliff Grove.

Cutliff Grove leaders knew back in October they were having difficulty moving forward. That's when they asked the city to help fund the 24 low to moderate income apartments they planned to build, but the city said no.

Without financial backing, HUD determined the church didn't have the ability to continue.
