What seems like the whole town of Tifton pays it's respects to 15-year old Justina Gay's family. Nina Steverson lost her daughter when a woman driving a Suburban hit and killed her just before 9:00 Friday night.
State troopers say Gay was walking South on Union road. A friend got word she was hit and called Steverson.
"I said what do you mean she said I got a phone call 'J J' was in an accident and I just talked to her," said Steverson.
Her mom said Gay had taken her black lab for a walk around the neighborhood. She didn't know she was walking on the main road along with traffic with dark clothing on.
"That was the only error and I don't know if she may have been trying to cross the road but she shouldn't have been on the other side," Steverson said.
State Troopers say she died instantly from impact. Priscilla Jones visits a memorial on the side of Union road where Gay was hit.
"When I found out I broke down crying," said Jones. " We were really good friends and she was so much fun to hang out with."
Jones and other friends came to support the family at a visitation at Bowen-Donaldson Funeral Home.
"I started balling because she was so special to me," said one sister, Heather Steverson. "She loved her friends, church, drawing, and her animals and I am really going to miss her."
Her dog made it out alive but is not acting the same.Gay's friends and family will continue to remember the good times they had with her.
Gay was in the eighth grade at Eighth Street Middle School. The driver of the Suburban was not charged. The family will hold a funeral Monday 2:00 p.m. At Oak Grove Baptist Church in Tifton.
