ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Equinox Chemical Plant was a smoky scene around 3:00 Saturday afternoon. Owner Mark Grimaldi says the fire started in the back of the building.

"It could have been something electrical or mechanical at this point," Grimaldi said. "We did not have any processes running and we were shut down for the weekend. Until we get through the investigation it's hard to say what the cause is."

APD shut down West Oakridge between South Westover Boulevard and Willie Pitts Jr. Road for about an hour Saturday.

Grimaldi says he drove by the plant just minutes before and everything looked fine. He spoke with fire crews who say it's structural, not chemical. Mostly plastic and insulation burned near the roof  in a roughly 10 by 10 foot area of the warehouse.

"We have emergency procedures in place when something like this happens and we also work with the fire department," Grimaldi said.

Equinox makes raw materials for artificial flavoring in food. The plant was not open Saturday. No employees were harmed. A firefighter was sent to the hospital for heat exhaustion. Grimaldi says the administrative offices were not burned. Employees can expect to return to work on Monday.

An equipment failure caused a fire at Equinox last year. The owner says the two fires are not related. Fire crews are still investigating what caused the blaze.
