THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) – Nearly one thousand people gathered at the Thomasville Fairgrounds to watch a crucifixion reenactment in honor of Good Friday.

The free, live performance was organized by several different churches in Thomasville and Thomas County. The reenactment included volunteers dressed as Roman Soldiers, a replica chariot, real horses, and the Mother Mary.

Organizers say its important not to get caught up in the commercial aspect of any religious holiday and to remember the lesser celebrated ones.

"People work and do their own thing and don't think about Good Friday," says John Doane.

Donny Hester played the role of Jesus.

"It's just overwhelming. Tears just come to my eyes being up there and thinking about what he must have went through."

Organizers are already planning for next year's reenactment and hope to draw an even bigger crowd to spread their message.
