ALBANY, GA (WALB) – A suspicious package left at Southwest Georgia Regional Airport was discovered to be an unattended suitcase after it was detonated by the bomb squad.
About 4:15AM, an airport security guard found a black suitcase near the flagpole at the main entrance of the airport. He called for backup and police responded.
About a half dozen people were evacuated from the airport. About 40 passengers who were set to take a 6:30AM flight were moved to a secure area and asked to remain there.
An loud boom was heard about 6:20AM, and that is thought to be the explosion of the luggage.
About 6:30AM, Albany police, Albany Fire Department, Airport security, and Transportation Safety Administration officials left the scene.
Airport management has not made a statement at this time.
Some flights were slightly delayed by the emergency operation.
The airport is now open again.
