Lee County, GA (WALB) –  The Georgia house passed a bill that would prohibit communities from requiring fire sprinklers in all new homes.

The Home Builders Association doesn't want the sprinklers required.

The Georgia Fire Chiefs Association is urging State Senators to kill that bill and require the home sprinkler systems.

New national building codes would require all homes built in 2011 to have a home sprinkler system. Home builders say their business is barely hanging on with the recession, and the added expense of the sprinkler systems would hurt it even more.

Georgia Representatives agreed, and passed House Bill 1196 prohibiting the requirement. But the Fire Chiefs Association is fighting back.
