Tifton bank robber gets 25-year federal sentence

Macon, GA – (WALB) - Leonard William Willis, Jr.  45, will spend the next 25 years in federal prison after he was sentenced by the Honorable Hugh Lawson, United States District Judge for the Middle District of Georgia.

Willis plead guilty to robbing the Colony Bank in Tifton in February of 2009. He also pleAd to robbing three Ormond Beach, Florida banks in February 17, 2009. 

On February 23, 2009, Willis robbed the Bank of America in Lake City, FL which was followed by the robbery of Colony Bank in Tifton, GA.  On March 2, 2009, Willis robbed the Wachovia Bank in Dublin, GA. 

Willis pretended he had a firearm and robbed the BB&T Bank in Forsyth, GA of $5,364.00.  Within an hour of the robbery, Willis entered the United Bank in Barnesville, GA and stole approximately $6,900.00. 

Willis was spotted by a Lamar County Deputy, and a high speed chase ended on Interstate 75 after officers deployed spike strips.

Deputies arrested Willis and recovered a large portion of the money stolen from the BB&T and United Banks. 

The case was investigated by the Forsyth Police Department, Barnesville Police Department, Monroe County Sheriff's Office, Lamar County Sheriff's Office, Georgia Bureau Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
