CONYERS, GA - (WALB) Turner Job Corps Center Driver Education Instructor David Daniels is now the President of the Georgia Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association (GDTSEA).
GDTSEA is the professional association that represents all groups involved in educating the public in traffic safety matters throughout the state of Georgia.
Through Turner Job Corps, Daniels provides students the opportunity to understand that safe driving is a key component of being prepared for the future.
"It's a great place for students to learn skills that they don't know they possess that they can build upon for success," Daniels said.
Turner Job Corps' mission is to prepare students for the workforce.
"Coach" Daniels has been an arena football coach, and has also coached at middle- and high-school level in the Albany, Georgia's Dougherty County Schools for years.
Daniels was a player for six years in the Canadian Football League (CFL). "When people ask me if I'm still coaching, I tell them I am a coach in a different arena now," he said.
"The [driver education] process begins with an academic approach to learning the rules and laws. As I coach, I take this foundation and apply it to the physical component of teaching my students to learn to drive. Students range from having no concerns about rules and laws, to students who are absolutely afraid to drive," Coach Daniels said.
Turner Job Corps is located behind the Miller brewery, near the former Turner military base. Turner Job Corps is a residential facility for 800-1,000 students. Driver Education is included in their curriculum. "One of the requirements for 90% of the jobs is going to require you (as a student) to be able to driver," says Daniels. "You're pretty much going to need a Georgia driver's license."
