LEESBURG, GA (WALB) - WALB News 10 has more information on the arrest of former Lee County Prosecutor Craig Mathis. He's charged with  possession of prescription drugs and intent to distribute.

It's an investigation the Lee County Sheriff's Department, the Drug Enforcement Administration, GBI, and the District Attorney's office has been working for weeks.

Narcotic agents arrested Lee County criminal defense attorney Craig Mathis Friday afternoon. The Lee County Sheriff's Department says a confidential source provided the information.

"It's a sad situation when you have to make these kind of arrests on not just these types of people, but anybody," said Lee County Sheriff Reggie Rachals.

Rachals says Mathis is charged for possession of Xanax and the schedule II drug Adderall. Schedule II drugs have a high potential for abuse. They're one step below illegal drugs like pot.

Mathis' wife says he had a prescription to Xanax. She says many times he carried it with him not in the bottle. I asked Sheriff's Rachals if Mathis could prove he had a prescription.

"That part I can't discuss either because it's part of the investigation," Rachals said.

Agents took Mathis' 1970 Mercedes Benz. It's impounded at the Lee County Jail where Mathis is currently booked.

"The important part is to help somebody mainly and not let it get any further than it is and to not hurt anyone else in the long run," Sheriff Rachals noted.

Rachals says Mathis practiced law in Lee County and Albany for several years. He says this is the first drug investigation he knows of involving Mathis.

"You never know what might come out of these kinds of cases and there's a chance something might advance from this," Rachals added.

Whatever it may be, sheriff's deputies and Mathis' family hope the court system the attorney served for so long will serve justice.

Mathis is still being held in the Lee County jail pending charges of controlled substances with intent to distribute. We'll know more on this investigation after he makes his first bond appearance before a judge.
