SYLVESTER, GA (WALB) – Crews from several agencies worked to put out a fire at a Sylvester house Tuesday afternoon.  It may be the quick-thinking of a neighbor that prevented the house from being a total loss.

Sylvester fire crews were called to 211 North Ayers Street a little after 2 o'clock Tuesday.

There was no one was inside the house when the fire started.  There was heavy fire damage in the kitchen and porch area and smoke and heat damage throughout the house.  A vehicle parked outside the house also was burned.

Sylvester Fire Chief Jody Yarbrough said, "No one was at home at the time of the fire. A neighbor actually saw smoke coming from the home and called 911."

Fire investigators are at the scene right now trying to determine the cause of the fire, but they think it was something inside the kitchen that started it.

The fire caused about $10,000 worth of damage.
