A concerned citizen is stepping up to help the children who have been devastated by the tornado in Oklahoma.More >>
ALBANY, GA (WALB) - We now know the name of an elderly man killed during rush hour when he got out of his truck on a busy road.
Dougherty County Police say 80-year-old Henry Walter Martin parked in the right-hand lane on Philema Road near Chehaw Park around five o'clock.
He got out of his pick-up truck and walked around to the back. That's when a Jeep Cherokee driven by 21-year-old Katie Cox hit him. Police say Martin's truck was still running.
His emergency break was on, but his flashers were not. They say drivers must use caution and pull to a safe place if they're having car trouble.
"We urge everybody to exercise extreme caution," said Albany Police Chief Don Cheek. "If you have to get out of your vehicle put your flashers on. If you've got a road kit with emergency triangles or a florescent sign, use them. Don't get out in the lane of traffic. Stay well off the road."
Martin lived on Philema Road north of Chehaw. Police are still investigating but don't expect to file any charges against Cox.
