Albany - Some philanthropists are taking their fight to reopen an AIDS shelter to county leaders. On Monday, the Dougherty County Community Coalition asked commissioners for $10,000 to $15,000 to restart the HAVEN shelter, closed in February due to a funding shortage.

"Many of the people who lived at the house are now homeless. We need this start-up money to help house and take care of these people in need," said Rev. H.B. Johnson, Community Coalition. The city donated a house to the HAVEN. And, the Community Coalition applied for federal and state grants to run the shelter. It could take a year before that money is handed over.
