Albany - If you wait to the last minute to renew your car registration, you may face big problems and fines. Beginning February 1, 2003, the state adopted a new car insurance policy that is slowing down registration renewal. Now you can't renew unless your vehicle identification number, your insurance card, and your tag receipt number match. If they don't, it's up to your insurance agent to clear up the problem.

"If you come into the tag office on the last day and there's a problem with your insurance, you may be stuck with a late fine. Please, allow yourself enough time to work out any problems with the new system," said Denver Hooten, Tax Commissioner.

The Department of Motor Vehicle Safety hopes the changes to registration will curb the number of uninsured drivers.
