Community reels from shooting rampage

March 31, 2003

Edison-- Friday night, Robert Kendrick shot five people, including his five-year-old twins. He then killed himself.

Authorities say Robert Kendrick shot his wife, stepson, his five year old twins and a neighbor and then, committed suicide. Kendrick's wife, Barbara and stepson, Craig Jones are listed in satisfactory condition in an Alabama Hospital. But twins, Miranda and Randall died.

People we talked to say Robert Kendrick had a history of alcoholism and abuse, which may have caused him to lose control.

Barbara Kendrick's niece, Tara Hollman, says "Barbara and Robert had problems before. Her kids and her have had to stay at my house some nights. He had even told her he would do something like this."

Tara Hollman is Barbara Kendrick's niece. She rode with her to the hospital on Friday.

Hollman adds, "When we left for the hospital, she was very alert. She seemed to be doing just fine."

Alaina Spann remembers seeing the happy twins, when she picked her child up from school, and she says they will be missed. "They were so happy and wonderful. I have not told my child yet. It is going to be so tough."

Many people say Miranda and Randall were wonderful children who brought joy to many lives. Now this community says their absence will forever be felt.

Robert Kendrick was a custodian at the Post Office in Edison.
