ALBANY, GA (WALB) – A Georgia Congressman announced his resignation Monday to devote his time to his run for Governor.

Nathan Deal made the announcement in his hometown of Gainesville this morning, then traveled the state with his message. In Albany this afternoon, he said he's leaving Congress because the state is at a critical point, and he wants to make sure he dedicates his full effort to the Governor's race.

The democratic party of Georgia issued a statement claiming Deal's resignation will obstruct a congressional investigation into an auto salvage contract Deal has with the state of Georgia.

To that he said, "That is absolutely untrue. You know, it's very easy for these liberal George Soros sponsored organizations like that to level charges against somebody. Anybody who made a complaint based on one AJC article, I think they're judgement is questioned and they say that's the basis on which they say they filed the complaint. My decision to leave Congress at this point is the fact that I need the time to dedicate to this race for governor."

Deal's resignation will become effective at the end of business next Monday.
