ALBANY, GA (WALB) - You don't have to be in Africa to enjoy an adventure through the Safari.
Chehaw held a safari-themed fundraiser on Jim Fowler's family plantation to raise money and awareness for the park. Chehaw wants to build a safari experience. Right now it has about 200 acres of property that's not being used.
It just needs millions of dollars to complete the project. Park Director Doug Porter says that shouldn't be a problem with help from the community. He'd eventually like to bring in some animals currently on Mr. Fowler's farm - some include zebras, antelope, and ostriches.
"I really think we can raise that money privately through grants," Porter said. "If we can simulate an African Safari I think it's pretty cool."
Porter has already begun staking out fences for the new project. If everything goes as planned he'd like to start bringing in some new animals some time this year.
Nearly 400 people attended the sold out event. They took a safari ride, enjoyed drinks, dinner and music.
