ACREE, GA (WALB) – A man is in the Worth county jail charged in the crash that killed a pedestrian Tuesday night.
33-year-old Joe Adkins was picked up late Tuesday night and brought to the Worth county jail for questioning after troopers say he called 911 saying he thought he hit something while driving. Troopers say he did hit somebody, a Worth county man. Now he's charged with vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident.
Around 7pm Troopers say 46-year-old Michael Thomas was walking on the side of Highway 82 in Acree when he was struck by a vehicle driven by Joe Adkins. When police and paramedics arrived Thomas was dead. Friends and neighbors say Thomas walked a lot and they often worried about him at night but they were shocked the driver didn't stop.
Thomas was just a short distance form his home on Peafowl Road when he was hit. The impact was so hard it threw him out of his shoes. Thomas' body will be sent to the GBI crime lab for an autopsy.
This is the latest in a string of hit and runs we've covered over the past couple months. Albany police worked a hit and run just last week that resulted in severe injuries. Two other fatal hit and runs occurred in Albany back in mid January and again early February.
Adkins' wife was also brought in for questioning Tuesday night, but we're told by the Worth county jail that she was not charged and released.
