Dozens of residents left high and dry

ALBANY, GA (WALB) – The water is on again for residents on 16th Avenue who lost it when a water main broke and opened up a sink hole.

It started opening up around lunch time on 16th Avenue near Seaboard Drive, and got so wide police had to close off the road.

Water Gas and Light crews worked for hours fixing the problem.

They were able to make a temporary fix late Saturday afternoon before the hole filled with dirt for safety.

The age and extreme temperatures changes recently likely caused the pipe to fail.

"Started out with a split in the main due to these temperature changes and the cold weather we've had lately, and now we're up into the 70's," said Mark Blanchard, WG&L Distribution Supervisor.

The road will be dug up on Monday to check if the sewer lines were damaged.

There is boil water advisory in effect for the next 18 to 24 hours for residents affected by the break.
