ALBANY,  GA (WALB) –  Some Albany youngsters got a lesson in water safety without even having to leave the classroom.

The Albany Area YMCA Aquatics director spoke to this group of 1st graders at Sherwood Acres Elementary School this morning.

She stressed the importance of swimming with a buddy, following the rules at the pool, and thinking before leaping.

"They think if they can play in their little pool at home then they can also go into a lake or into a big pool and still be safe although they can't touch the bottom. They may not realize they cannot touch the bottom of the pool," said Terry Ragatz, YMCA Aquatics Director.

She spoke to Sherwood Acres students in grades K through 2nd today. This was the kick-off, but the YMCA will eventually introduce the program to all Dougherty county elementary schools using the kid-friendly Red Cross curriculum.
