ALBANY, GA (WALB) – Five people were killed in a crash between a family car and a state van on a South Georgia highway Thursday afternoon.

A woman, her three young children, and a disabled man all died. The father of those children is a soldier currently deployed to Iraq.

April White and her three children, all under the age of ten, were killed.

They crashed head on into the van on highway 280, near Hemlock Road, just outside of Rochelle's City Limits.

The van was a Georgia Department of Human Resources Vehicle transporting Daniel Elder of Abbeville who died.

The driver Brenda Gaines is in still critical condition at a Macon hospital.

"It appears at this time that the state owned van was traveling eastbound on HWY. 280, and the second vehicle was traveling westbound on HWY. 280," said Chief Deputy Adam Newman, Wilcox County Sheriff's Office

Troopers say the Specialized Crash Reconstruction Team will not investigate the crash since the at-fault driver was killed and no charges can be filed.
