VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - After failing to make the playoffs last season Valdosta State head football coach David Dean says his players are hungry to prove themselves in 2010.
The Blazers open up spring practice Monday night and they have good reason to expect better results this year.
Only 6 starters need to be replaced, including 3 on the offensive line.
Quarterback Kellen Lewis is gone and so are all conference selections wide receiver Cedric Jones and defensive back Carlos Anderson.
Coach Dean says the key to spring ball will be strengthening the line and secondary.
Finding a new quarterback is also a top priority.
Last year's back up Russ Callaway is the top candidate but will be competing against 4 guys.
David Dean said. "We want to be solid at our quarterback position and name a starter. We want to be able to carry out of spring practice our timing offensively. We've got to do a better job up front of protecting the quarterback. Defensively we've got to find that pass rusher, we've got to solidify our secondary."
The VSU spring football game is March 6th at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.
