SAINT LEO, Fla. – As the Lady Blazers jockey for position in the region rankings, there was no better time for Head Coach Kiley Hill to pick up his 200th career win. With a dominating first half, Valdosta State beat regional foe Saint Leo, 77-57, to move to 15-7 on the season.
Sierra Nixon led the way for Valdosta State with her third double-double of the season. She scored 12 points with 11 rebounds. Sczeny Hartry dropped double figures with 11 points while Michelle Thompson and Alli Jones each scored 10 to secure VSU's 11th consecutive win.
Saint Leo jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, but Leschelle Matthews, who finished with seven points, five assists and four rebounds, nailed a three-pointer from Tamika Booker to start the scoring. Then the Lady Blazers were off. Nixon made a lay-up and Brittany Daniels knocked down a jumper. Matthews gave out her first assist to Thompson, who buried VSU's second trey of the game.
With that, Valdosta State pulled ahead, 10-7, and would never relinquish the lead, going on to finish the half with a 51-33 lead. The Lady Blazers led by as much as 25 in the second half.
Valdosta State took advantage of a stellar shooting day, finishing 50.9 percent from the field on 29 of 57 shooting. The Lady Blazers also crashed the boards to gain an overwhelming 42-27 advantage over the Lions. That led to 23 second chance points for VSU to just nine for Saint Leo.
