ALBANY, GA (WALB) –Schools in many south Georgia counties shut down today because of the weather.

Friday the YMCA in Dougherty County opened up their holiday camp to provide a place for parents to take their kids.

Its plain to see just how much these kids are enjoying themselves.

"It feels good to be out of school for once," said 12-year old Brandon Sibley.

Out of school because of a rare occurrence in southwest Georgia.

"We're not in school today because it might be snowing," said Sibley.

So to help out working parents the YMCA opened its doors to kids in Dougherty and Lee Counties.

"When we found out yesterday the Dougherty county school system was going to be closed we opened our holiday camp for those parents who were in a jam," said Tracy Wallace, Resource Development Director for YMCA.

So instead of hitting the books these 30 kids had fun instead.

"They are doing valentines, they are doing connect four, they are doing drawing and they are doing necklaces," said Kirkland Holiday.

But most of them said they couldn't wait to get home, and play in the snow.

"I like snowballs and throwing them at people but the only part I don't like is getting hit," said Sibley.

"Most of these kids haven't ever seen snow and it wont even hit them until they see it," said Wallace.

"I like to play snow fighting with snow and I like to build snowmen with snow," said Holiday.

The YMCA says even though school is out, they are always in and ready to help working parents out in a pinch.

"The YMCA is dedicated to providing affordable childcare for working parents," said Wallace.

The cost of the camp is 27 dollars for non YMCA members and 24 dollars for members.
