ALBANY, GA (WALB) – People from across Albany gathered at MCLB to celebrate Black History on Thursday.

The Albany Area Chapter of Blacks in Government held a luncheon on base. Dr. Eugene Sherman addressed the group about the long lasting negative impact slavery has had on African Americans and the responsibility of all groups to help everyone move forward together.

He said, "Got to get away from the welfare mentality, got to work on reducing black pathology. For the whites, recognize that slavery didn't emanate from initiatives of blacks, but white did themselves. There's a commonality in white and black Americans as we strive to maintain democracy."

The theme of this year's black history program was the History of Black Economic Empowerment.
