DAWSON, GA (WALB) – The Justice Department is checking out the new Terrell County Jail to make sure it makes the grade.

Private consultants working for the Department inspected the jail Tuesday for the first time since it opened late last year.

No major flaws were discovered. But officials did raise some concerns over correctional staffing numbers and meals served to inmates.

The Justice Department ordered the county to build a new jail years ago because of poor conditions at the old jail.

The opening was delayed as the sheriff and county commission butted heads over staffing levels.
