ALBANY, GA (WALB) – Firefighters often deal with intense stress as they rush into rescue situations. Albany firefighters continue to work to get healthier.

Tuesday, they held a third Fired Up for Fitness session at Phoebe Putney Hospital. It's a year-long program to help firefighters achieve fitness and health goals.

Because their jobs are so stressful, and they may have other stress factors at home, they're encouraged to talk about their stresses and how to manage them.

Darrell Sabbs said, "There must be some opportunity to talk about what they're seeing, what they're witnessing and how it's affecting them and so stress management is so important. It's as equally important as knowing how to eat well, or knowing how to be physically fit, to be mentally strong and to maintain some mental stability in this kind of work is just so important."

Other topics being taught are prescription drug management, food and nutrition, and exercise.
