ALBANY, GA (WALB) – A warning from health officials that a highly contagious stomach flu is making its way around southwest Georgia.
They say the best way to prevent it by simply washing your hands and practicing good hygiene. Several cases of norovirus have been reported at schools in Dougherty and Colquitt County and at nursing homes in southwest Georgia.
The virus is extremely contagious, and if not treated properly can lead to severe dehydration.
"Dehydration is a significant problem and in those instances individuals might be hospitalized and given a regiment of electrolyte replacement IV fluids, but there is no treatment," said Dan Staib, Acute, Chronic & Infectious Disease Director with Albany Public Health.
Health officials say the very young and the elderly are most susceptible to the virus. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps.
