VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) – If you burn more than yard waste in Lowndes County you could be fined.
Lowndes County Fire Rescue has responded to a lot of illegal fires lately.
The County has a burn ordinance that allows people who live in dense residential areas to burn on the first and third Saturday of each month, but you must have a burn permit from the Georgia Forestry Commission.
Lowndes County firefighters responded to 180 grass or trash fires that got out of hand last year.
"If you do burn without a permit and the fire were to get out and damage someone else's property, or there were to be a loss of life then you can be financially liable for that property and criminal charges could be involved in loss of life," said Lowndes Co. Public Information Officer Paige Dukes.
