(Charleston, South Carolina-AP) -- The Port of Charleston's fierce competitor to the south, the Port of Savannah in Georgia, has overtaken Charleston as the nation's fourth-busiest container port The ranking by the Journal of Commerce is based on the number of loaded containers passing through a port.

While one of many gauges, it is a closely watched measure of a container port's standing. Savannah's growth was helped by a surge in Asian business while some say Charleston's drop was due in part to recent local opposition to port expansion.

Savannah rose to Number Four in December behind Los Angeles, Long Beach, California, and New York.

Anchored by major Asian importers such as Wal-Mart, Best Buy and Home Depot, Savannah has the second-fastest-growing Asian import business among East Coast ports.
