ALBANY, GA (WALB) - People in Dougherty County are coming together to encourage kids and adults to become better readers.
Albany State University and the Dougherty County school system kicked off the Big Read Monday night at the municipal auditorium.
Everyone is encouraged to read "A Lesson Before Dying" by Ernest Gaines. There will be community readings, discussions, and lessons dealing with the book all month.
"We're hoping we can bring the community together by having these essay contests, discussions, and to just get the interest back where it needs to be," said ASU English Society President Sheila Eaddy.
Albany State received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to take part in the Big Read.
