Importance of rural hospital demonstrated

March 20, 2003

Camilla-- Mitchell County Hospital was once again ready to treat the injured from Thursday morning's tornado.

In February 2000, the hospital was overwhelmed with patients, and this morning was no exception.

Hospital administrator Ron Gilliard said the hospital staff exceeded his expectations. They were notified of the tornado shortly before 5:00 a.m. and implemented their disaster response plan.

The hospital treated more than 50 injured transferring nine critical patients to nearby hospitals. They expect to continue to see walking injured through-out the next 12 to 24 hours. Gilliard said situations like these show the importance of small rural hospitals like Mitchell County's.
