War, weather boost blood demand

March 20, 2003

Albany-- With deadly tornadoes hitting South Georgia and the war in Iraq, you may want to help by donating blood.

After the 9-11 attacks, the Albany blood bank was flooded with people giving blood, but the number of donations dwindled fairly quickly.

The Southwest Georgia Red Cross is trying to do a better job of spreading out the number of donations.

"Rather than having a huge influx of donors and too much at one time, trying to moderate it so have certain number of donors each day and don't waste anything," said Dian Swafford of the Red Cross.

Recently, donations have remained steady and blood supplies at the hospitals have stayed near full capacity.
