ALBANY, GA (WALB) - In the fall Valdosta State announced the addition of a women's soccer team and after months of searching the Blazers have found a coach to build the program from the ground up.
Melissa Heinz has been hired as head coach of the Lady Blazers. Heinz built the Division 1 Winthrop program from scratch in 2003 and spent the last seven seasons with the Eagles. Winthrop won the Big South Championship in 2006 and Heinz was named the conference coach of the year. The program struggled the last 3 years and Heinz was fired after the 2009 season. Heinz is looking forward to a new opportunity and says the key to building a successful program starts with recruiting.
"2011 kids are deciding where they want to go right now and all the way into the fall so those are the kids I need for the first team" said Heinz.
Heinz will have 18 months to prepare before the Blazers take the field. VSU will begin competition in the 2011 season.
