ALBANY, GA (WALB) – More furlough days could soon be coming to nearly all Dougherty County School Employees.
The Finance Committee voted Monday on a proposed 3 day furlough. If passed by the full board Wednesday, it would bring the total number of furloughed days this year to six.
Finance Director Robert Lloyd says the furloughs would be made in effort to curtail losses from declining state tax revenues over the next year. It's a move that would ultimately help save nearly 2,000 jobs state wide.
"The three day furlough for the system would save the system about $1.6 million. The deduction from the state is a little under $1 million. So the additional $600,000 would go to meet the 1% cut," said Lloyd.
The proposed days are in March and May. The furloughs would not affect school bus drivers and crossing guards and extended day employees who work 180 days.
Officials say on top of declining tax revenues, right now there is no provision that would bring additional federal stimulus money to the school system next year.
