ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  Hundreds of people gathered at an Albany Church to pay their final respects to an Albany Civil Rights Icon.

The celebration of Life service for Mary Young-Cummings was held at Mt. Zion Wednesday. She died Saturday at the age of 66.

Young-Cummings was instrumental in the civil rights movement in Albany and around the nation before serving as an Albany city commissioner and state representative.

Rep. Tyrone Brooks is the President of the Georgia Association of Black Elected Officials... a title Young-Cummings once held. He says those she left behind can continue her legacy.

"Serving the poor and the needy, helping those who do not have legal representation, making sure that we take care of the children and the elderly," said Brooks. "Making sure that we stay firm in the area of civil rights and human rights and women's rights. She's going to be missed, but her legacy can live on by doing her work."

Cummings funeral service is Thursday in her hometown of Fitzgerald.
