LOWNDES COUNTY, GA (WALB) – A murder suspect on the run for more than a month is dead. He was shot by a Lowndes County deputy, after he held a knife to a woman's neck.
Sources tell us 21-year-old Derek McKinnon was shot in the head. Deputies found him a little after 7 o'clock Friday night, near Leon Avenue and Deborah Drive.
He ran to a house in the 2200 block of Pin Oak Drive in Valdosta and held a woman at knife point.
Deputies told him numerous times to put down the knife. When he refused, a deputy fired one shot. The GBI is investigating.
McKinnon was wanted for shooting and killing the Adel Quick Stop store owner and wounding his son December 14th.
He's also a suspect in a robbery in Hamilton County, Florida Thursday night and at the Quick Change Convenience Store in Lowndes County December 30th.
Deputies nearly caught him Thursday night. They stopped the truck he was driving, but he ran away.
