ALBANY, GA (WALB) -  Rescue teams from all over the world are at work now in Haiti. Some south Georgia firefighters know how difficult and dangerous that work can be.

Lieutenant Ricky Thompson recently finished training with the Georgia Search and Rescue Team. He learned how to rescue people from building collapses, confined spaces, and trenches.

"You can't help somebody if you get hurt, said LT. Thompson. Ricky Thompson with the Albany Fire Department.  It's all about safety and I think we would have better success with training. It's very in-depth and intense training."

The Georgia Search and Rescue team has a truck in Valdosta packed with specialized rescue gear ready deploy if needed anywhere in this region.
