ALBANY, GA (WALB) –   A 100-year old home burned to the ground Wednesday morning in Mitchell County after a fire in the fireplace apparently got out of control.

The remnants of the home on Flint Road were still burning at noon. Firefighters from Autry State Prison responded to the blaze that was so hot it melted the front of two cars parked near the home. Two people inside the home were able to get out safely.

Fire investigators are expected to inspect the rubble before making an official ruling on the cause. The American Red Cross is assisting the family.
